Update on U.S. Tariffs for Automobile Imports: 25% Additional Duty Exemption for Older Vehicles
- 2025.04.7 | NEWS

We are pleased and relieved to bring you some positive news regarding the new tariff updates announced by the U.S. government on automobile imports. As of March 26, 2025, a new 25% additional tariff will be introduced under the Presidential Proclamation, but there’s a key exemption that could benefit many of our clients.
Vehicles Over 25 Years Old Are Exempt:
The U.S. government has officially confirmed that vehicles manufactured before the year 2000 (older than 25 years) will be exempt from the new 25% tariff. This means that any automobile older than 25 years will not be subject to the additional tariff, offering some relief for classic car collectors and those importing vintage vehicles.
Tariffs on Vehicles:
For vehicles that do not qualify for the exemption, the tariffs remain unchanged. Here’s a quick summary of the tariffs:
Passenger Cars: 2.5% tariff
Trucks (including light trucks): 25% tariff
No Time Limit for Exemption:
The duty exemption applies at any time, meaning that it doesn’t matter when the vehicle arrives in the U.S. as long as it meets the criteria of being older than 25 years. So, if you’re planning to import a vintage car, it’s good news that this exemption will remain in place without a specified deadline.
Important Considerations:
While this exemption provides clarity and offers an opportunity for individuals importing older vehicles, it’s important to note that the interpretation and implementation of the Presidential Proclamation could change over time. There is always the possibility that the U.S. government or relevant agencies could expand or modify the scope of the exemption in the future.
If any changes are made that could affect the import procedures or the tariffs applied, we will make sure to keep you informed promptly. Our team will continue to monitor any updates and provide you with the latest information so that your imports are always in compliance with U.S. regulations.
